What is Otto?
Otto is an AI video editor that works inside DaVinci Resolve Studio. You tell it what you're making in plain words, the way you'd text an editor. It watches every clip, builds the edit on its own timeline in your project, and takes your notes from there. Whenever it's a matter of taste, like a caption look, a speed ramp or a transition, it shows you cards drawn on your own footage and waits for your tap.
What can Otto do in DaVinci Resolve?
The bulk of an edit. It cuts talking heads down to the clean takes, cuts music videos to the beat, drops in b-roll from your own clips, and adds animated captions, titles, speed ramps, transitions, effects, zooms, sound effects and colour. It makes vertical versions and does the export. Every choice of taste is a one-tap card on your own footage, and you can mix and match: stack transitions on one cut, swap a caption's font or colour, drag a ramp's curve. It can also work out why Resolve is misbehaving. What it can't do yet: Magic Mask, multicam and audio mixing.
Do I have to learn a lot of buttons?
No. Otto is chat first: you say what you want, the way you'd text an editor, and it does it. Buttons only show up when there's a choice of taste, like which caption look or which transition, and then it's one tap on a card showing your own footage.
Will my edit look like a template, like every other AI edit?
No. Otto has no presets and no templates. It builds the edit around what you shot: your moments, your beat, your words. When it's a matter of taste, it shows you cards drawn on your own footage, so you see the caption, ramp or transition on your shot before anything goes on. Nothing is added until you tap, and it never throws in a flashy transition you didn't ask for.
Can Otto edit a music video and cut to the beat?
Yes. It listens to the song first: the tempo, the beats, where the chorus kicks in, the lyrics. Drop markers if you know where you want the cuts. If not, it'll find them in the music.
Can Otto do kinetic typography and animated captions?
Yes, and it's one of the fun bits. Every word is timed to the voice and can slide, pop, bounce or type itself on letter by letter, with the key words picked out in their own colour and glow. Otto shows you a row of 14 caption looks, each one drawn on a frame of your own clip. Tap one and lay it as it is, or mix and match first: swap the font, pick a colour from the wheel or straight from your footage, add glow, change how the words come in and go out. You can also just say it: "like that one, but green".
Can Otto do speed ramps and slow motion?
Yes. Ask it to slow a shot down and it's done, flat or ramped. Name a moment, like "when he jumps", and it shows you six ramp cards, each with three frames of your shot and its speed curve. Tap one and it's on. Want it different? Drag the curve: up for faster, down for slower, sideways for earlier or later. Each ramp is fitted to the length of its shot, so it never runs out of footage and freezes.
Can Otto add transitions and effects?
Yes, 13 of them: flash, fade, wash, bloom, defocus, whip, zoom punch, zoom blur, spin blur, slide, soft blur, light leak and sunset leak. Ask for one and Otto shows you cards, each playing the transition between your own two shots. Tap one, pick which cuts get it, and it's on. You can mix and match too: stack up to three on one cut, like a soft blur with a light leak. It won't throw them in on its own if you didn't ask. There are six effects too, like blur the background and colour pop, each shown on a still of your shot.
Will Otto mess up my timeline?
No. It only touches what you name. For anything that comes down to taste, like a caption style or a speed ramp, it shows you the options and waits. Its edit lives on its own timeline, never on top of yours, and "undo" takes you back.
How is OttoEdit different from the AI in DaVinci Resolve 21.1?
Resolve 21.1 lets an AI chatbot drive Resolve, but you have to know exactly what to ask for, and it mostly works off the transcript. Otto actually watches the footage, so it knows which shot has the dog in it. It'll pitch ideas when you're stuck, build the captions and ramps for you, and keep everything on its own timeline. There's also nothing to set up.
Does Otto upload my footage?
Not the whole thing. Speech-to-text runs on your own computer. To see your shots, Otto sends some frames and short bits of your clips to a vision model. Your instructions and the transcript go to a language model so it can think it through. Your original files never leave your machine.
Does Otto work with the free version of DaVinci Resolve, or on a Mac?
Not yet on either. You need DaVinci Resolve Studio, the paid version, on Windows. Better you hear it now than halfway through an install.
Is Otto free, and how do I get it?
Free right now, no card. We're letting people in a few at a time and approving each one by hand. When it's your turn, you'll get one email with your download.
About Otto
Why Otto?
Because the slow part of editing isn't the creative part. It's scrubbing through forty minutes of footage to find the six seconds that work. Otto watches all of it, builds the cut in your Resolve project, and hands it back for you to shape. It's the closest thing to having an editor sit next to you, without the invoice.
Is Otto like hiring a video editor?
That's the idea. You tell it what the video's for, it goes through the footage and comes back with a cut. Then you give notes like you would to anyone: "shot 4 looks too dark", "swap the last shot", "less glow". You're still the one making the calls. It just does the dragging.
What's the best AI video editor for DaVinci Resolve?
Depends what you need. If it's one job, like cutting silences or making subtitles, there are good tools built just for that. If you want something that goes through your footage and builds the whole edit inside Resolve, that's what Otto's for. It's free right now, so the easiest way to judge is to try it on your own clips.
Is there an AI video editor that works inside DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. No exporting, no importing, no second editor. Otto works on the project you have open, and what it makes is a normal timeline you can keep editing by hand.
How do I talk to Otto?
Otto has its own window that sits next to Resolve. You type to it like you'd message someone: "make it shorter", "slow down shot 5", "why is there no sound?" It answers, and the change shows up in Resolve.
Can AI edit my videos for me?
Yes. Otto will happily do the first cut, which is usually the part nobody wants to do. After that it's a conversation: shorter here, different shot there, captions on. You can grab the timeline and finish it yourself whenever you like.
Is Otto good for beginners?
Very. You don't need to know where anything lives in Resolve. Ask for what you want, or ask "how do I…?" and it answers from the official Resolve manuals. People who've edited for years use it too, mostly to skip the boring bits.
Talking to Otto
How does Otto work?
Open your project in Resolve and open Otto next to it. It watches your clips once and remembers them. Tell it what you want, and it builds the edit on its own timeline inside your project. From there you can keep giving notes or take over by hand.
How do I prompt Otto? What should I say?
Type it the way you'd text an editor. "make a 40 sec highlight from these, cut to the song." That's plenty. If it's not sure what you mean, it'll ask. And it won't sneak in a flashy transition you never asked for.
Do I need to write long or perfect prompts?
No. "add captions", "make it vertical", "slow motion on shot 3" all work fine. Typos are fine too. Only add detail when you actually care about it.
Can I type one prompt and get a finished video?
No, and that's on purpose. Otto isn't a button that turns footage into a finished video. It gives you a first cut, then you work towards the video you want together: "tighter here", "captions on", "warmer", "swap the last shot". Each note gets you closer. It's how you'd work with a real editor, and it's why the video ends up looking like yours, not like everyone else's.
What are some example prompts?
Short and simple works best:
-
"make a rough cut with only the clean takes"
-
"40 second highlight from these, cut to the song"
-
"turn this into a vertical reel"
-
"cut out the pauses"
-
"add captions"
-
"make the captions glow a little"
-
"zoom in when he says money"
-
"where else could we zoom?"
-
"it feels flat, what would you add?"
-
"slow motion on the jump"
-
"shot 4 is too dark"
-
"match all the shots to shot 2"
-
"swap the last shot"
-
"why does my export look washed out?"
-
"why is there no sound?"
-
"undo"
When you know exactly what you want, say it all at once:
-
Captions: "add captions, clean white text, key words in orange with a soft glow, each word pops in"
-
Captions: "like the second look, but bigger and in yellow"
-
Titles: "only put the lines about money on screen, big and bold"
-
Zooms: "open with a slow push in and hold it, then punch in on the key words"
-
Speed: "speed ramp into slow motion right when he lands, then back to normal"
-
Sound effects: "a whoosh on every zoom and a soft pop when each caption comes in"
-
Sound effects: "just one riser at the start, nothing else"
-
Colour: "give it a warm film look, but only half as strong"
-
Colour: "shot 3 is too blue, warm it up and match the rest to it"
-
Music: "cut these to the beat, about 20 seconds, vertical"
-
The whole thing: "30 second reel from the interview, use the beach clips as b-roll, captions on, export for reels"
How do I point Otto at a shot or moment?
However you'd say it to a person. "shot 3." "at 0:12." "when he says money." "the last shot." Or click it: Otto shows your timeline as a strip of shots. Click a shot, the line between two shots, or drag along a stretch, then say "add a zoom here".
How do I change or remove something Otto put on?
Everything Otto adds shows as a mark on its timeline strip: a transition on its cut, a zoom, effect or speed change on its shot. Tap the mark and choose Change or Remove. Or just say it: "take the glow off shot 4".
How do I give notes on a cut?
Just say what's bugging you. "swap the last shot." "hold shot 3 longer." "no transitions." It changes that and leaves the rest alone.
Does Otto ask before it changes things?
When it's a taste thing, yes. Caption looks, ramps, sounds and colour all come as options for you to pick. It'll also check with you before clearing a timeline or changing a project setting. Plain instructions like "slow motion on shot 3" it just does.
Where do my clips need to be?
In the media pool of the Resolve project you've got open. You can also drag footage straight into the Otto window.
Does Otto remember my footage?
Yes. It watches each clip once and keeps notes on your computer, so the next edit with the same footage starts straight away.
Otto vs Resolve's AI
Do I need my own Claude or ChatGPT account?
No. The AI comes with Otto. No keys to paste, no extra subscription.
Can Claude edit videos in DaVinci Resolve?
With Resolve 21.1, Claude can run steps in Resolve if you set up the connection yourself and tell it exactly what to do. Otto is the no-setup way: open it, say what you want, and it watches your footage and does the edit in your timeline.
Resolve 21.1 already connects to AI chatbots. Why would I need Otto?
Getting a chatbot into Resolve 21.1 means paying for Claude or ChatGPT yourself, installing a coding tool, and wiring them together. Then it does what you tell it, step by step. Otto skips all that. Open it and talk. And it brings what the raw connection doesn't have: it's actually seen your footage, and it knows what a good cut looks like.
Isn't a chatbot like Claude or ChatGPT good enough to edit on its own?
They're brilliant at thinking, but on their own they've never seen your clips or heard your song. Otto puts language models and vision models together with an editor's instincts, so it can see the footage, hear the music, and make the cut, on its own timeline where it can't wreck your work.
Can ChatGPT edit my videos?
With Resolve 21.1 and some setup, ChatGPT Codex can run steps in Resolve for you. Otto does the whole edit with no setup, and it watches your footage while it does it.
Is Resolve 21.1's AI free? Is Otto?
The Resolve connection comes with Resolve Studio, but you pay for your own Claude or ChatGPT plan to use it. Otto is free right now with the AI included. No card.
What does Resolve 21.1 do that Otto doesn't?
Fair question. Blackmagic's own connection reaches a few things Otto doesn't yet, like multicam and audio levelling, and it runs on Mac. If you want something that follows exact commands, it's a solid option. If you want an editor who's watched your footage and has opinions, that's Otto.
What Otto can do
Can Otto edit in Fusion?
Partly. Its captions, titles, transitions and camera moves are all built in Fusion, so you get that polish without touching a node. What it won't do yet is build your own custom Fusion setups.
Can Otto add captions or subtitles in DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. It writes them from what's said and times every word. They come out as styled captions, though, not plain subtitles. It doesn't fill Resolve's subtitle track yet.
Can Otto add titles and text on screen?
Yes. Ask for a title, or for only certain lines on screen, and it puts them where you want. You pick the look from its title styles.
Can Otto colour grade my footage?
Yes. If you shot in log, it converts it to normal colour first. Say "check my colours" and it goes shot by shot, tells you what's off, like too dark or too blue, and fixes it when you say yes. It also has looks and LUTs (your own included), each shown on a frame of your own footage, and one tap puts it on. It suggests the ones that suit your footage, adjusts exposure, contrast, saturation and warmth on any shot, and matches every shot to the one you like best. Masks, power windows and Magic Mask are still on you.
Can I combine transitions?
Yes. Pick one transition card, then add up to two more to go on with it on the same cut, like a soft blur with a light leak. Choose which cuts get the mix, and it goes on in one go. Ctrl+Z takes it back.
Can Otto add effects like blurring the background or a colour pop?
Yes. Six effects, each shown as a card on a still of your own shot: blur the background, colour pop (black and white except the person), black and white, darker edges, soft focus and glow. Tap one, pick which shots get it, done. Blur the background and colour pop show up when there's a person or subject in the shot.
Can Otto add zooms and camera moves?
Yes. Push in, pull out, or push and settle, on any shot, at the second you say.
Can Otto add sound effects?
It picks from its own library of 73 sounds, from whooshes and risers to clicks, glitches and background ambience, tells you where each one goes and why, and adds them once you say yes. It doesn't mix audio, duck music under voice or clean up noise yet.
Can Otto work in Fairlight?
Not much yet. It can switch audio tracks on and off and suggest sound effects. The mixing is still yours.
Can Otto export my video?
Yes. Say "export for reels" or "for youtube", plus the format or codec if you care, and it renders it from the Deliver page.
Can Otto turn a landscape video into vertical (9:16)?
Yes, and it keeps the person in frame while it does it. 4:5 and 1:1 too.
Can Otto use Magic Mask, multicam or 3D tracking?
Not yet. We'd rather tell you now than have you find out mid-edit.
Kinds of video
What kind of videos can Otto edit?
Talking heads, YouTube videos, podcasts, reels and shorts, music videos, montages. If you'd cut it in Resolve, it can have a go at it.
Can Otto cut out pauses, mistakes and bad takes?
Yes, this is where it saves the most time. It listens to every take, keeps the clean version of each line, drops the false starts and tightens the gaps, all in the order you said it. Before it cuts, it shows you the lines it's keeping, so you can change the plan first.
Can Otto add b-roll?
Yes. It puts cutaways from your own clips on the words they're about, so the shot of the coffee lands when you say "coffee". It'll tell you why it picked each one.
Can Otto pick my best shots?
Yes. It's watched every clip, so it knows the shot where the light hits right from the one where someone walks through the frame. It picks by what's on screen, not only by what's said.
Does Otto work in languages other than English?
Yes. Its speech-to-text handles most major languages and works out which one you're speaking. We've tested English the most, so tell us how it does in yours.
Control and undo
Can I undo what Otto did?
Yes. Press Ctrl+Z or say "undo" to take back the last thing, one step at a time, and Otto tells you what came off. You can also jump back to any earlier version of its cut.
Can I keep editing by hand after Otto?
Of course. It's a normal Resolve timeline. Change whatever you like, and Otto picks up your changes and works from them next time.
What if Otto gets it wrong?
Tell it, the way you'd tell anyone. "too long." "use the other take." It fixes that bit. Or hit undo, or just fix it yourself.
Can Otto help when I'm stuck, or when Resolve acts up?
Yes. Ask "what should I do next?" or "where could we zoom?" and it suggests two to four spots, each with its time and why, then waits for your pick. Ask why an export is black or playback lags, and it reads your settings, render queue and tracks, tells you the cause and one fix, and changes nothing until you say yes. "How do I…?" questions it answers from the official Resolve manuals.
Can Otto fix a clip Resolve won't import?
Usually. Tell it which file, and it'll figure out what it really is and why Resolve is refusing it. If you say yes, it makes a copy Resolve will take and leaves your original where it is.
Privacy
Is my footage used to train AI?
The outside AI companies we use aren't allowed to train their own models on it. We may use it to make Otto a better editor, with your name and email stripped off, and we never sell it or share it. If you'd rather we didn't, send one email to support@ottoedit.com and that's that. Otto works exactly the same.
Who owns the videos I make with Otto?
You do. Your footage, your edits. We won't publish them or use them in our marketing without asking you first.
What you need
Which version of Resolve do I need?
DaVinci Resolve Studio 20 or newer. We've used Otto on versions 20 and 21.
What computer do I need?
If your PC runs Resolve Studio comfortably, it'll run Otto. Windows 10 or 11 and an internet connection, since the heavy AI work happens in the cloud. Speech-to-text runs on your machine, so the first pass on a long clip takes a little longer. After that it remembers it.
Is there any setup in Resolve?
One switch. Turn on external scripting in Resolve's preferences so Otto can work in your project. It'll show you where it is.
Windows says "Windows protected your PC" when I install. Is it safe?
Yes. Windows shows that for apps from newer publishers. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".
Price and access
Is there a limit on how much I can use it?
There will be a fair daily allowance per person, so the beta stays quick for everyone. We're still setting the amount and will share it here before it starts.
Other tools
How is OttoEdit different from Descript, CapCut, AutoCut or Opus Clip?
Descript and CapCut are their own editors, so you'd leave Resolve to use them. Opus Clip chops long videos into shorts on the web. AutoCut and FireCut are Resolve plugins for single jobs like silence cutting, captions and zooms. Cardboard is its own editor in the browser and on Mac. Otto stays inside Resolve and works on the whole edit, start to finish, and it can sort out Resolve when it misbehaves.
Is there an AI for…?
Is there an AI that can edit videos for me?
Yes. OttoEdit is an AI video editor that works inside DaVinci Resolve. Tell it what you're making, and it watches your footage and builds the edit on a timeline you can keep working on.
Is there an AI plugin for DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. OttoEdit runs alongside DaVinci Resolve Studio on Windows and edits in your open project: cuts, captions, speed ramps, colour, transitions and exports.
Is there an AI that edits like a real video editor?
OttoEdit is built to work like one. You brief it, it watches the footage, cuts it, pitches ideas and takes notes like "make it shorter" or "swap the last shot", all inside DaVinci Resolve.
Is there an app that automatically edits talking-head videos?
Yes. OttoEdit, inside DaVinci Resolve, listens to every take, keeps the clean version of each line, drops the false starts and tightens the pauses.
How do I remove silences and pauses in DaVinci Resolve automatically?
Resolve can find silences for you, but you still make the cuts. OttoEdit makes them for you: it hears every take, keeps the good lines, drops the stumbles and closes the gaps.
How do I add animated captions in DaVinci Resolve automatically?
Resolve Studio can turn speech into plain subtitles. For animated, word-by-word captions, OttoEdit times every word to the voice, shows you 14 caption looks drawn on your own footage, and lays in the one you tap. Swap its font, colour or animation first if you like.
Is there an AI that makes kinetic typography?
Yes. OttoEdit makes word-by-word animated text inside DaVinci Resolve: words that slide, pop, bounce or type on, timed to the voice, with key words highlighted.
How do I make a speed ramp in DaVinci Resolve without keyframing?
Normally you'd set the speed points by hand. With OttoEdit you just name the moment, like "speed ramp at 7 seconds", tap one of six ramp cards, and it's done. Drag the curve if you want it different.
Is there an AI that cuts video to the beat of music?
Yes. OttoEdit listens to your song, the tempo, beats and sections, and cuts your clips on the beat inside DaVinci Resolve. Or on your markers, if you've placed them.
Is there an AI that can edit music videos?
Yes. OttoEdit cuts music videos inside DaVinci Resolve. It watches your clips, listens to the track, and builds the cut on the music, with ramps and transitions where they belong.
Is there an AI that adds b-roll automatically?
Yes. OttoEdit places cutaways from your own clips on the words they match, inside DaVinci Resolve, and tells you why it chose each one.
Is there an AI that picks the best shots from my footage?
Yes. OttoEdit watches every clip and knows what's in each shot, so it picks by what's on screen, not just by what's said.
How do I turn a horizontal video into vertical for Reels, Shorts or TikTok in Resolve?
OttoEdit makes a 9:16 version of your cut in DaVinci Resolve and keeps the person in frame. 4:5 and 1:1 too.
Is there an AI that colour grades video in DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. OttoEdit converts log footage to normal colour, checks every shot and fixes what's off when you say yes, applies looks and LUTs, adjusts exposure, contrast, saturation and warmth shot by shot, and matches all your shots to the one you like.
Why is my DaVinci Resolve export black / why is there no sound / why does playback lag?
Usually it's a setting, a track that's switched off, or something stuck in the render queue. OttoEdit checks all three in your project, tells you what's wrong and how to fix it, and doesn't change anything until you say so.
Is there an AI assistant that helps when I'm stuck in DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Ask OttoEdit "what should I do next?" and it gives you a few ideas with times and reasons. Ask "how do I…?" and it answers from the official Resolve manuals.
Can ChatGPT or Claude edit videos?
Not by themselves. They can't open your editor or watch your clips. OttoEdit pairs language and vision models with DaVinci Resolve, so it can see your footage, and you talk while it does the edit.
Is there an AI video editor for YouTubers?
Yes. OttoEdit edits YouTube videos inside DaVinci Resolve. It cuts the talking down, adds b-roll, captions, zooms and ramps, and exports for YouTube.
Is there an AI that edits podcasts into clips?
OttoEdit cuts podcast and interview footage in DaVinci Resolve. It keeps the clean lines, drops the stumbles, adds captions and makes vertical versions for social.
What's the fastest way to edit videos in DaVinci Resolve?
Let something else do the first cut. OttoEdit builds the edit from your footage inside Resolve, so you spend your time on notes, not on scrubbing.
Is there a Descript or CapCut alternative that works in DaVinci Resolve?
OttoEdit. Rather than moving your footage into another app, it does the AI editing right inside DaVinci Resolve.
Is there a free AI video editor for DaVinci Resolve?
OttoEdit is free right now, AI included, no card. It needs DaVinci Resolve Studio on Windows.
Is there an AI that edits videos without me learning Resolve?
Yes. With OttoEdit you say what you want in plain words and it does the work in Resolve. You can ask it how anything works, too.
Can AI replace a video editor?
Not the taste, and it shouldn't. OttoEdit does the legwork an editor does, like watching everything, cutting, captions, ramps and colour, so you can spend your time deciding instead of dragging clips around.
Still wondering? Try it on your own footage. It's free right now.
